Essential Oil Adventures – Headaches & Mint

So I was having a mild-ish headache – the kind with a little tension between the eyes and at the back of the neck – and I remembered that the experts say Lavender and Peppermint are two essential oils (EOs) that can be helpful for mild headaches.

So I went to one of my fave websites for learning about EOs and found a great little article about… essential oils and headaches!

I adapted their recipe suggestion as follows:

Headache EO blend

  • 1/4 oz sweet almond oil (as my carrier oil)

  • Spearmint EO, 1 drop

  • Lavender EO, 1 drop

  • Eucalyptus EO, 1 drop

The scent was pleasant – minty, fresh and slightly floral – but very, very mild. I decided to be disciplined and not double up the concentration.  With essential oils, less is usually more!

I poured a little bit of the blend into my palm, rubbed my hands together and massaged it into the back of my neck, my temples and my forehead.

I felt a cooling sensation – that was courtesy of the spearmint and eucalyptus.  I also eventually felt a slight release of tension in my muscles.  And the headache diminished somewhat.

I repeated the application a couple of times.  It’s quite nice, actually, and I think I’m going to make and bottle some so that hubby can massage it into my upper back and the back of my neck.

Yay essential oils!  I can’t wait to try more blends for use in and around the home.

Update:

It’s the next day and yes, I can confidently say that this EO blend of spearmint, eucalyptus and lavender helped to relax the tension in my muscles, and to relieve the minor headache QUITE a bit.  I’m impressed!  Gonna buy some dark glass bottles to make up some of these blends and keep them handy: Essential oils for first aid!  How ’bout dat? 🙂
